This area of study is in constant motion. Scientisit are developing new solar cells with higher levels of energy uptake each year. SOme of the best so far have proven to reach asounding levels of up to 48%. However, these are often very expensive and are yet not the best alternatives for creating solar power on a industry scale.
The main problem is often that if you want to absorb as broad a spectra as possible, you loose efficiency. If however you focus on efficiency for a particular wavelength, converting as much ass possible of the solar radiation then you loose the other wavelengths.
To counter this, many cells are now consisting of many layers, where the top ones absorb short wavelength, the middle medium wavelengths and the bottom ones the longer wavelengths. The next battle is to make all this cheap enough to be economically motivated.
